September 2023 Newsletter

This month we met on September 9th and heard from Pastor Zebell and Matthew teNyenhuis, a physical therapist who works with people with Parkinson’s. Matt spoke to us about the importance of movement in Parkinson’s progression.

Some of the key points Matt spoke about include:

  •  Physical and cognitive impairments in Parkinson’s lead to reduced movement, which becomes normal as the disease progresses due to an alteration in sensory perception.

  • Increasing input to increase output in movement, as to keep the ability to move well as the disease progresses.

  • The importance of good posture in people with Parkinson’s and the way it enables mobility.

  • Being mindful when moving because moving well is a skill that takes effort to perfect.

  • Stretching the range of movement and aerobic exercise that is interactive, consistent, and intense.

  • The importance of moving as much as possible and getting out of the house.

For more information, check out Matt’s PowerPoint below.

This month, we also raised $204 for the support group in our fundraiser with Panera. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Please join us at our next meeting on November 11th. For more information and events please check our events page.
