MAY NEWSLETTER

As most of you know, we began meeting in-person in March! We just had our second meeting and had the pleasure of hearing from two speakers! Meghan Velasquez with Valley Caregiver Resource Center and David Reed with Assured Senior Living Solutions.

Meghan spoke briefly about the resources available through Valley Caregiver Resource Center which serves the Central Valley from Merced to Bakersfield. Some resources available are:

  • Age in Place - resources to help keep seniors home longer

  • Medicare - assistance with navigating Medicare options

  • Ombudsman - client rights advocates

  • Oasis - Adult Day Program

Meghan is the Director at Oasis Day Program which is available to seniors with memory loss, dementia, and Alzheimer’s. It serves as a safe option when someone cannot be left alone due to their condition. It also provides respite for caregivers who need a place to leave their loved ones so they can have personal time. The clients who attend make friends, have fun, engage in activities and games in a supervised environment.

Cost is $10.00/hour as opposed to $40.00/hour for in-home care. A commitment of 8 hours/week is required. This can occur in two 4-hour shifts or can be a full day of 8 hours. They are very flexible to meet the needs of the client and caregiver. The program is certified through the state so does require certain medical information to be given. Guest passes are available for a visit to see the program and caregiver is invited to stay as well.
